Elevation changes bring an unexpected challenge at Beau Rivage Golf and Resort in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Beau Rivage Golf & Resort is the lone stay-and-play facility in Wilmington. But that's not all that sets it apart.

Occupying the highest point (70 feet) in the low-lying coastal city gives Beau Rivage some unexpected elevation changes and a major dose of character.

Winding its way through a housing development, wildlife preserve and around a circular lake, Beau Rivage has a startling variety of holes. It knocks in at 6,709 yards with a 72.4 course rating and a 138 slope, accurate indicators of the golf course's ability to yield low scores yet also bedevil players with its narrow, bending fairways, mature trees, deep bunkers, and ample water hazards and wetlands.

The 25 hotel rooms which flank the clubhouse are equipped with microwave ovens, refrigerators and wifi. But the best thing about staying and playing is the chance to roll out of bed, take a few steps down the hallway, and enjoy breakfast on the veranda overlooking the sprawling practice area.
